In a major push to integrate artificial intelligence into classrooms, Bodhan AI has announced the launch of its “AI Literacy for Teachers” programme, aimed at training more than 1 million teachers in AI-enabled teaching practices by 2027.

The announcement was made by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the IIT Madras Technology Summit held at Bharat Mandapam on May 5, 2026. Bodhan AI is an AI-for-education Centre of Excellence incubated at Indian Institute of Technology Madras.

The programme aims to change the way teaching is delivered in classrooms by positioning AI not as an add-on, but as a core assistant for teachers across lesson planning, content creation, assessments, and student feedback systems.

Calling the initiative important for building a “future-ready India”, Dharmendra Pradhan said programmes like these would help create an AI ecosystem in education that is inclusive, ethical, and aligned with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Prof. V. Kamakoti said AI literacy among teachers has become essential as technology increasingly reshapes education. He added that the initiative would help teachers improve pedagogy, efficiency, and learning outcomes at scale.

Dr. Mitesh Khapra said the goal is to make AI a “trusted co-pilot” for teachers. According to him, the programme moves beyond awareness and focuses on practical daily use of AI tools in classrooms.

The initiative seeks to reduce teacher workload by enabling AI-assisted lesson planning, worksheet generation, multilingual content delivery, assessments, and administrative tasks. It also aims to improve consistency in teaching materials and support more personalised learning experiences for students.

The rollout will happen in phases, beginning with pilot programmes in the coming months. The first public cohort is expected to launch on Teachers’ Day, September 5, 2026.

The programme is also aligned with Bodhan AI’s broader Bharat EduAI vision, which includes AI-driven lesson planning, automated handwritten assessments, multilingual communication tools, AI-supported administrative workflows, and student-facing AI tutors.

The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Education, school systems including Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, state governments, and other institutional partners.
