The Central Electricity Authority (CEA), Ministry of Power, along with the National Federation of Engineers for Electrical Safety (NFEES) and with support from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), organized a historic All-India Electrical Safety awareness programme in an attempt to raise awareness of electrical safety among schoolchildren. The ceremony, which took place on June 26, 2024, which is recognized as “Electrical Safety Day,” launched the “Electrical Safety Handbook for Students” and kicked off National Electrical Safety Week (NESW).

The program’s subject this year, “Safety Starts from School,” emphasised how crucial it is to teach children about electrical safety procedures from an early age. More than fifty children from various schools in Delhi attended the event, as did over 150 representatives from several Power CPSUs, District Administrations, NPTI, Oil Manufacturing Companies, TPDDL, CPWD, and other stakeholders.

The Central Electricity Authority’s Chairperson, Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, addressed the assembly and emphasised how important it is to educate the public and schools about electrical safety. He underlined that in order to promote a safety culture and lessen electrical hazards in communities, it is imperative that basic understanding of electrical safety be taught in schools.

The participants were also addressed by a number of distinguished senior officials who emphasised the importance of electrical safety in daily life. These officials included Sh. A. Balan, Member (Planning), CEA; Sh. A.K. Rajput, Member (Power System); Sh. Mahipal Singh, Principal Chief Engineer, CEA; Dr. Tripta Thakur, Director General, NPTI; Ms. Rishika Sharan, CEI, CEA; Sh. A K Maharana, Head, ETD, BIS; and Sh. Anil Jauhri, Adviser-NFE & Former CEO, NABCB

The publication of the “Electrical Safety Handbook for Students,” which was created by NFEES, was a significant event. The guidebook, which was introduced by Shri Ghanshyam Prasad, is a thorough reference that covers basic electrical principles, identifying hazards, and taking preventative action. It is intended to provide parents, teachers, and students with the necessary knowledge to guarantee safety in electrical situations. It is an approachable and educational resource.

By equipping young people with the knowledge and abilities needed to properly reduce electrical risks, the programme represents a major step towards creating a safer future. Going forward, CEA and its partners are still dedicated to using community involvement and educational programmes to advance the cause of electrical safety.
