GSEB Revises Exam Pattern For Classes 9 And 11

Ahmedabad: In a significant move, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB) has announced a revised examination format for Classes 9 and 11. The changes, aimed at aligning the assessment structure with the board exams for Classes 10 and 12, will come into effect from the academic year 2024–2025. The move is said to affect over 15 lakh students studying across Gujarat and, therefore, this move will ensure easy management of academic activities of all students with adequate acquaintance of board exam system.

In the new format, 70% of the question paper will comprise descriptive questions while the remaining 30% will comprise objective questions. The earlier percentage had only 20% objective-type questions. It is going to change in such a way that it would bring about more adaptation in students in the board exam format, minimize failure rates, and make it accessible.

To provide greater flexibility and convenience to the students, the descriptive section will now provide more options. Earlier, only two options were available to the students, and now they have five options to choose from. This way, they can try two or three questions according to their choice and make the exam student-friendly. The new format will be applied uniformly to all streams, such as science, commerce, and general studies, thus making the approach to assessment across disciplines uniform.

The changes are more notable for Class 11, for which revised syllabi and sample question papers have been prepared for core subjects. These include Gujarati, Hindi, English, Sanskrit, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and sociology. The idea is to give the students proper preparation materials and familiarity with the new pattern well in advance.

Interestingly, while major subjects have undergone a sea change, some subjects will remain the same. For Classes 9 and 11, the examination pattern for subjects like computer studies, music, yoga, and health and physical education will remain the same. Similarly, in Class 9, vocational and skill-based subjects like agriculture, home science, animal husbandry, and dairy science will continue to have the same examination pattern.

The move by GSEB to modify the exam format is part of a larger approach taken to address some of the transitions that students have been facing academically. The board assessment structures for classes 9 and 11 would be aligned with the board exams, thus closing the gap that exists between various stages of education and making it easier for the students to traverse through the system. The introduction of a more descriptive question format is expected to encourage critical thinking and in-depth understanding among students, moving away from a heavy reliance on rote learning.

The board’s initiative has been welcomed by educationists and stakeholders who believe it will have a positive impact on students’ learning outcomes. However, some have raised concerns about the additional pressure that might arise from the changes. GSEB has taken some measures to smoothen the transition. Teachers and schools are being given detailed guidelines, training sessions, and sample papers to help them adapt to the new system and guide their students accordingly.

This new format is aligned with the National Education Policy, which focuses on holistic education and conceptual understanding, and it reflects the board’s commitment to evolve its methodologies in line with changing needs of students. The new format of GSEB hopes to equip students with skills and knowledge needed for higher education and competitive examinations.

Schools across Gujarat are getting ready to adopt the new syllabus and examination pattern before the implementation date. Students are also being motivated to welcome the change as a better opportunity to get better prepared for board exams. The GSEB, therefore, aims to set a new benchmark in the state’s secondary and higher secondary education system.
