The National Medical Commission (NMC) has lately issued a clarification on the eligibility of students studying in the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) and State Open Schools to appear for the NEET UG 2025 exam. This was done due to questions raised by candidates wanting assurance on whether open-learning school students can appear for the National Eligibility Entrance Test for undergraduate medical courses. The NMC’s clarification comes after a confusion caused by a notification from the National Testing Agency (NTA) over the NEET eligibility criteria for such students.

The NMC, in its official circular, countered the confusion caused after the NTA issued the NEET UG Bulletin 2025. The NMC stated that the bulletin was not consistent with the NMC’s regulations. The misunderstanding had arisen when the bulletin seemed to imply that students studying through NIOS or State Open Schools were not allowed to appear for the NEET UG exam. But as per the NMC’s recent clarification, there is no bar on such students appearing for the NEET UG test, provided they fulfill the prescribed requirements.

The circular issued by NMC quoted the GMER-23 Regulations under which students studying from NIOS or State Open Schools can take the NEET UG test. It also explained that students can study a supplementary subject through NIOS as long as they do so from an authorized center. The government notice, bearing the signature of the director of the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), Sukh Lal Meena, asserted that the candidates should ensure the study of any other subject to be carried out through institutions as approved by the concerned authorities.
