Share

The 92-year-old academic genius and former Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Thursday ascended to heaven. He was a two-time prime minister of the nation and drew the public eye globally due to his economics policies while serving as Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996.

History Is Indeed Kinder

During his last press conference as the PM of India, in 2014, he remarked, “I honestly believe history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or for that matter, the Opposition parties in Parliament.” His stoic demeanour and remarkable political career has been discussed from various angles but nevertheless this remark of his was proven true.

From Gah To Global

Similarly, Dr. Manmohan Singh’s academic career has inspired many, as he hailed from a small village in Punjab (now in Pakistan) named Gah and continued to achieve remarkable accolades and degrees from universities around the world.

The Story Of Panjab University

The ex-PM pursued his bachelor’s degree in Economics from Panjab University in Chandigarh, which he graduated from with flying colours in 1952. His academic excellence paved the way for India to get a celebrated PM.

Following this, in 1954 he earned his Master’s degree in Economics from Panjab University.

From Cambridge To Oxford

He graduated in First Class with Honors from the St. John’s College of the University of Cambridge in 1957. He eventually moved on to get a further Doctorate in Philosophy (D. Phil) from the university of Oxford in 1962, working on the thesis “India’s Export Trends and Prospects for Self-Sustained Growth”.

He did not stop there, though; he had several honorary degrees from many high-sounding institutions across the world, including both of his alma maters.

The Right to Education Act

The Right to Education Act (RTE) was one of the most significant educational policies during the tenure of the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh. The act was passed in 2009 and has ensured since then free and compulsory education to children for the age of 6 years to 14 years. Thus, a fundamental right for every child in India.

Conclusion

While India mourns its Prime Minister, the qualities of academic excellence, unflagging thirst for knowledge, and perseverance, which were hallmarks of Dr. Manmohan Singh, will continue to inspire.
